Run Two Miles @11:58 - Say What?

My SmartCoach training program is filled with this kind of weird expressions like ‘@11:58′ and ‘5mi@10:12′. Do they want me to run in 11:58 in the middle of the night? Finish your 5 mile run in 10 min 12 secs? Say what???

16 Weeks, 33 Kilometers And 3000 Meters

This autumn I’m going to participate in a running event called Pirkan Hölkkä. The route is 33 km long, so it isn’t as long as marathon. It’s good practise for marathon and it also serves as a trial for my “running motivation”. To be better prepared than for Pirkan Hiihto, this time I’ll train for the event…  I used the SmartCoach service on Runner’s World site and got myself a training program. Tomorrow I’ll start with the program and begin by resting. Nice and easy exercise. Think I still go to the gym…

About this post’s title: Pirkan Hölkkä is 16 weeks from now, I’m going to run the 33 km and also break the 3000 meter limit in Cooper test. This year should be better than the previous :)

L3: Lessons I Learned In 12 Minutes

Life number 3 (L3) has started in happy moods! I was excited to see my Cooper test result last Saturday, since it would tell how I’m making progress with my training plan. I made it my week’s goal to run the test no matter what, so of course some obstacles occurred :) Read the rest of this entry »

L2: Sometimes You Just Need To Tweak Your Training Plan

Big week has started, I’m about to test myself again in the Cooper test. This weeks goal is to run 2600 m in the test. I’m excited to see to results, since I feel like I gained some speed last week. Because of the test and my condition (I have been really exhausted on Mon/Tue) I tweaked my training plan. I’m replacing the fast paced run with the Cooper test, since I think they are quite similar. For the rest of the exercises I’ve looked a better day to do them. There’s a chance I won’t be able to everything this week, but I will take the Cooper test because I sooooo curious to know my current speed… Read the rest of this entry »

L1: Follow-up of Day 6

Last day of the Life1. I extended the training plan by one day (from 5 days to 6 days), so I went for running on Saturday morning. I enjoyed the morning with a good 70 minute run.

The longer the run, the longer the time. Add low intensity and you have lots of time to think :) Below are some thoughts from the run.

L1: Follow-up of Day 4, Another Tip for Brushing Teeth

I almost slipped from the training plan today :) I woke up 5:15, but somehow I just didn’t get up from the bed. I fell asleep and woke up 15 minutes later. It was a interval training day, so I knew it wouldn’t take much of my time, 10-12 minutes plus additional 15-20 minutes for putting clothes on and shower. And there was the 6:13 bus to catch. OK, better to get up and smell the flowers.

I have listed my excuses (I will post it someday :) ) which I have used when it’s time to go running. Being sleepy is one of them, so I couldn’t leave the interval session just because of that. Again I’m thankful I went running, it was soooo awesome!!! I felt like flying, since my legs didn’t get tired during the 10 minutes and I was running faster than I usually do. I kept my heart rate at 160-170, so it’s like 80-90% of my maximum heart rate (max HR: 220 - 28 (age) = 192 ). Calories don’t burn that much in this kind of short session, I used only 150 kcal.

L1: Follow-up of Day 3, Brush Your Teeth Before Shower

Day 3 got started early. I woke up 4:50 which gave me time to stretch before running. It was time to take an easy 30 minute run. Due to my early wakening, it was still dark outside and a bit colder (12 C) than usual, but I wore my usual running gear (shorts, long sleeve shirt). That was a good choice :) As long as you keep running, you won’t get cold.

The run went as planned. I kept my average HR at 127 and consumed 355 kcal.

That’s enough about todays traininig, here’s the fun stuff:

L1: Follow-up of Day 1

The first round of 52Lives started as planned. I woke up 5:08, put my running gear on and got out. I usually go running straight from the bed, so I don’t have time to think about excuses why not to go :) This Monday morning there was no reason to think about excuses, though. I didn’t feel tired, the weather was absolutely beautiful and it was the first day of my life (Life1) :)

The 3000m Cooper Test Challenge

Cooper test is a running test where you run as far as you can in 12 minutes. It was developed back in 1968 by Kenneth H. Cooper. Like many other sport activities, the test was introduced first for US military use. I was introduced to this test in secondary school and afterwards I took the test in an ice hockey summer camp and in the army. My personal best is still the 2800 m which I ran in the first time :) Worst result is 2510 m, which I was able to run couple of months ago…

Along the way I’ve been talking with my friends about running 3000 meters in the test. That would be a dream come true, since the talking has been going on for about 10 years now. I think that with proper training this goal is achievable. Do I see my first 52Lives challenge here…?
