L11: The 1-Hour Workoutweek

Have you read the book ‘The 4-hour workweek‘ by Tim Ferriss? Well, I got something similar over here. It’s called ‘The 1-Hour Workoutweek’. Tim’s idea is to spend as little time working as possible and do the fun stuff instead. I wish I could tell you my system is just the same, but there’s a tiny difference… Tim’s system is about maximising the fun, but unfortunately 1-Hour Workoutweek makes you feel … umm, not sad but semi-fun.

The 1-Hour Workoutweek

So if you read this far already, I’ll tell you the truth right way. The 1HWOW is not a system. It’s a training week gone bad.

On week 10 of my 52 week training program I got sick, so I had to skipped training for the whole week. When week 11 started, I was enthusiastic to start training again. But what happened?

  • Monday. I skipped gym just because my routine was different. I usually go to the gym during my lunch break, but on Monday I had a meeting later on, so I just skipped the gym. No worries, will go there tomorrow.
  • Tuesday came, so I went to the gym still embarrassed of my Monday’s lack of self discipline. I did a good workout, even got 5 pull-ups, so only 25 to go :)
  • Wednesday: party-party. It was our company’s team recreation evening. Bowling, eating out, couple of beers.
  • Thursday: tired (w/ a little bit of hangover) from last night, nooooo training.
  • Friday: Lots of work to do, so gym skipped.
  • Guess what happened on Saturday? It started snowing!!! My kids were happier than ever, they love the snow. I was excited too, it doesn’t seem so dark outside with snow on the ground. But what affected my training is the ice that comes with the cold weather. And when there’s ice, there’s no running. My running shoes are still in the box… On the other hand I changed the winter tires to our car, so I got some exercise.
  • Sunday: We went to see my kids’ favorite band and spent the day on the road. I exercised with a flat tire, somehow one of the winter tires was empty in the morning. I had to use the hand pump two times to get to the gas station.

Conclusion And The Lesson I’ve Learned Thousands Of Times

Tim is travelling the world thanks to his great outsourcing system. I’m not happy with my 1HWOW but it contained lessons I’ve learned oh so many times before… yay.

  • Exercise whenever you have the possibility to do it. Don’t skip the chance, because it might be a while until the next chance comes. Our former president used to say the same thing, but he was talking about taking a dumb whenever possible…
  • There are no real barriers keeping me away from training. If I do another 1HWOW, I can look in the mirror again. There’s the biggest barrier.
  • One beer. If you go to a bar to have “a beer”, it rarely is only “a beer” you enjoy there. It’s more like 2-5 beers. A mathematical problem?
